Wine of the Week

2nd January 2006

2001 Pinot d'Alsace, Beblenheim, Domaine Bott-Geyl
Alsace, France, £7.99, James Nicholson

When you see Pinot d'Alsace on the label – without the qualifying Blanc, Gris or Noir – it means you've got a mix of Pinot varieties, and this mix can be highly successful. Bott-Geyl is a serious producer, and this is lovely wine, quite unlike anything else from France, almost rich in its perfumed honeyed way, but refreshing
fluffy apple flesh and a streak of mineral stoniness keep the
balance perfectly.
