Wine of the Week

14th August 2006

2004 Sauvignon Blanc, Garuma Vineyard, Viña Leyda, Leyda Valley, Chile, £7.95, The Wine Society

This is in a silly, overweight bottle but the wine inside is explosively good. It comes from the small new coastal area of Chile called Leyda: the flavours Leyda can achieve with Sauvignon Blanc are so thrilling it could outstrip Marlborough in New Zealand for quality – so long as it is not overhyped and over-exploited. This is a carnival parade of mangetout peas, lime, capsicum, kiwi fruit, coffee bean and blackcurrant leaf. And the wine is 13.5% alcohol. It shouldn't be possible to get such green flavours and yet such alcoholic ripeness, but Leyda can do it.
