Wine of the Week

16th January 2006

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruca Malen,
Mendoza, Argentina, £8.75, Corney & Barrow

Fascinating big bruiser that manages to be assertive and brash as well as submissive and soft, all at the same time. The fruit is rich, sweet, verging on the overripe – but if you're in the right mood you'll say it's a hotchpotch of blackcurrant, black plum and mountain herbs ripened to perfection and coated in black chocolate. And then you notice a surprising syrupy soft presence of ripe longanberry and raspberry.
