2001 Bourgogne Chardonnay, Alex Gambal, Burgundy, France, £11.50, Mayfair Cellars
After blasting your way through a selection of New World headbangers it's often a delight to stumble on something cool and restrained and elegant. Indeed the danger is that the difference from what went before will be so pronounced, you'll not give it a second chance. But this was too good to miss – cool, dry, almost lean, but with classic white Burgundy flavours of oatmeal and honey and that strange sexy sweaty thing the French daintily call 'sauvage'. Taken from Oz Clarke's Wine
