25 August 2003 2000 Shiraz Graham Beck, Coastal
Region, South Africa: £6.99 Waitrose
South Africa hasn’t been making
Shiraz for very long, but it has taken to it like a duck to water. At this
price point and below they’re beating the Aussies at their own game of
providing rich, tasty, no-frills crowd-pleasers. This has a warm, come-hither
smell of toffee, plums and chocolate, and that’s pretty much what you get in
the mouth too, with a bit more smoke and some sweet-sour cherry resembling a
Tunes cough sweet.
