25 October 2004 2002 Pinot Grigio, The Boulders, California, USA, £4.99, Co-op
Most budget-priced Californian wine tastes flat and sweet and you can't finish the bottle. But the Co-op has taken a proactive line and found a producer who'll create good flavours at a fair price – just like the rest of the New World. This is a bit like a Sauvignon in style – leafy and appley – but there's also a nice flavour of white peach, and it's very fresh for a Californian wine.
