2005 Syrah, Camplazens, Vin de Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, £6.49, Majestic
Vin de Pays d'Oc Syrah could mean anything, quite frankly. Luckily the British couple who own this vineyard have chosen a top-notch patch of land in an area called La Clape near Narbonne and the Syrah they grow there is textbook stuff that could easily hail from the Rhône Valley at more than twice the price. Its perfume is an unlikely but beautiful mix of violets and peppercorns and the taste manages to mix that pepper with licorice, full creamy damsons and plums and the slight sizzle of hot stones.
