2005 Bordeaux Supérieur, Château Pey La Tour Reserve, Bordeaux, France, 14.5% ABV
Waitrose, The Wine Society, £8.99
This is the reserve ‘special treatment’ wine of a very good property in the middle of nowhere, owned by the big Dourthe company. The land must be good because the wine reaches 14.5% alcohol – that’s almost obscene, even in a star year like 2005. Certainly the flavour is sumptuous for what is technically a lesser growth: cream mixing with soft fat plums and shiny leather and chocolate, the whole thing just about held in check by a light pebble earthiness. Is this the face of Bordeaux in the global warming future?
