4 October 2004 2000 Faugères, Clos Roques d'Aspes, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, £6.99, Marks & Spencer
The character comes partly from the excellent hillside vineyards of Faugères in southern France, but equally important is the grape variety, Mourvèdre, which is rarely bottled on its own. It gives very four-square wine, not scented but brooding and powerful, with a rich viscous texture of stewed fruit and a distinct tannic burr.
