Wine of the week | Retailer of the month | Tasting with Oz 2004 Bloomsbury Cuvée Merret, Ridgeview, West Sussex, England 12% ABV Waitrose, Butlers Wine Cellar and other independents, £18–£19 The potential for English fizz is massive, and the producers have had a couple of stellar years, winning awards and accolades worldwide. But I feel they’re slightly stretched at the moment, perhaps because, for the first time, demand has exceeded supply. Even so, this cuvée from Ridgeview is looking good – quite high in acidity, but that’s not unusual with English wines and it means they age extremely well. The fruit is good strong baked apple peel – Bramleys, I should say – and there’s honey and yeast there in support. Serious, lean, but good. Taken from the new Oz Clarke 250 Best Wines Wine Buying Guide 2008
