30th October 2006
2005 Chardonnay, Windy Peak, De Bortoli, Victoria, Australia, £6.99, Sainsbury's
This wine is based on fruit from Victoria's cool Yarra Valley; in French terms that's still not exactly cool, but this gives you the big Aussie flavour without the sugar and the flabby overripeness. It's got very attractive nectarine, pear flesh and syrup ripeness, the oak adds a little spicy vanilla, but the acidity holds it all in check, so you get that extra Aussie fruit but you also benefit from a positively European freshness and acid balance. Taken from Oz Clarke's Wine
