27th November 2006
2004 Cabernet-Shiraz, Margaret River, (Evans and Tate), Western Australia, £6.99, Marks and Spencer
I met the bloke who made this last year. He asked me why didn't I like his wines more. I said I did, so long as they were blended by M&S – just get all his stuff up to M&S level and I'll love his wines. It's true. M&S do a really good job on this powerful red and sell it at a very fair price, because Margaret River is one of Australia's most expensive areas. This is a dry, earthy red, but the earth is so washed with blackberry and black plum fruit, scented with herbs and massaged with vanilla oak, that you realize this is like a super-ripe, but not ridiculously overripe, Bordeaux – and that's exactly what Margaret River aims to do.
