5th December 2005
2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Nativa, Carmen
Every time I taste this gorgeous wine I find it difficult to believe there is a more beautiful Cabernet anywhere in Chile. No. Anywhere in the world. And it's doubly exciting because of it's price: £7.99. For the essence of Cabernet, where beauty gets the better of power, where sheer enjoyment gets the better of intellectual appraisal. Cabernet isn't often like that. But this is pure blackcurrant, distilled into a syrup of sweetness and balance, with a couple of mint leaves crunched into the liquid and the wine stopped from cloying by a distant dryness – as though it had been filtered through summer-warmed stones.
