Wine of the Week

9th January 2007

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Pirque Estate, Maipo Valley, Chile, £6.99, Marks and Spencer

This come from the top Haras de Pirque estate: another example of M&S going to top producers and making up delicious blends from their barrels. Haras de Pirque make powerful, burly, dark wines drenched with black fruit, tannins and dark promise. They've lightened up a little here: it's still a dense wine with enough tannin to make your gums shudder, but the massive weight of black plum and black cherry juice and black chocolate richness loaded with spice makes it a triumph. Me? I'd buy it and age it five years.
