2004 Côtes du Rhône Villages, Plan de Dieu, Domaine de la Meynarde, Rhône Valley, France, £5.49, Marks & Spencer
I remember visiting Plan de Dieu when I was a student – basically it was a man-made gravel bed created out of copses and hillocks by a guy who'd done a deal in earthworking gear with the Americans after World War II. It took a while to bed in, but he created a pretty good vineyard and this is a very pleasant mix of quite rich syrupy red berry fruit, a little tannin and quite a lot of peppertree and lovage scent.
