2005 Shiraz-Grenache-Mourvèdre, Plexus, John Duval Wines, Barossa Valley, South Australia, 14.5% ABV
Liberty Wines, £16.95
John Duval used to make the legendary Grange red for Penfolds in the good old days. Now he’s gone independent, which is Penfolds’ loss and his gain, because in his new-found liberty he’s gone back to the three great old Barossa Valley red varieties – Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre – and crafted a phenomenally lush red with a texture as dense as syrup. The flavours are all rich and black – black plums and prunes, black chocolate, liquorice and Fowler’s Black Treacle roughed up with the rasp of fresh herbs.
