Wine of the week | Retailer of the month | Tasting with Oz 2006 Saumur Rouge, Les Nivières (Cave de Saumur), Loire Valley, France 13.5% ABV Waitrose, £4.99 Oh, what a wine for this price. It ’s throbbing with personality, with an unmistakable sense of place, of a vineyard, of great grapes grown just there and nowhere else. These are Cabernet Franc grapes grown on the pale, crumbly soils of Saumur, more a white wine destination, but brilliant for red. Cabernet Franc is a real star of the Loire Valley, especially when the wine can sing pure and crystalline with no oak aging. Here, there’s not a whiff of oak, just luscious, deep, ripe raspberry and blackcurrant fruit and a chalky, pebbly tide running through the wine as though the vineyard can’t bear to be parted from its fruit.
